LET’S EXPLORE

Impact on PineCreek water flow

Over 64 billion litres of water move from Surprise Lake to Atlin Lake each year. How much water can be used for hydro production has always been independently determined by what the ecosystem can sustainably manage

WATER FLOW IN PINE CREEK WILL REMAIN UNCHANGED FOR MUCH OF THE YEAR WITH THE HIGHEST WATER DELAYED BY A FEW WEEKS DUE TO INCREASED STORAGE ON SURPRISE LAKE

With a 70cm-higher weir between Surprise Lake and Pine Creek, high water levels on Pine Creek and Pine Creek Falls will take longer to appear and last for a shorter period of time.

Concerns have been voiced about the impact of these changes to the water table and the wetted water width of Pine Creek itself.

Environmental review confirms no damage to the Pine Creek ecosystem should be expected.

This is possible because Pine Creek traditionally moves its highest water levels during a short window of the year. This fast-moving high water temporarily inundates parts of the riverbed, but its impacts are only temporary.

Atlin’s Hydro Opportunity holds some of that fast-moving water back, to be released when it can be used to most effectively produce much needed electricity.
